US, South Korea, Australia, Qatar and Japan had bid in 2010 to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. After out bidding the rest of the countries, Qatar started its preparations to host its first FIFA World Cup.
It will also be the first Arab country to host the World Cup. To avoid the scorching summer heat, the kick off will be in the winters.
8 stadiums will be prepared for the World Cup out of which 7 are being built from scratch. These stadiums are equipped with open-air cooling technology. Out of the 8 stadiums, the Khalifa International Stadium has already been inaugurated in May last year after undergoing some major renovations and upgrades. Two more stadiums will be ready by the end of December this year and the rest will also be completed two years before the World Cup.
The FIFA President Gianni Infantino appreciated the progress on infrastructure of the stadiums on his visit to Qatar and said that the World Cup in Russia was the best, but the 2022 World Cup has to be even better.
The Khalifa International stadium was built in 1976 and has a 40,000-seating capacity. It has already hosted the Gulf Cup, Asian Games and the AFC Asian Cup.
The Al Wakrah Stadium is being installed with a retractable roof. It can also seat 40,000 people and is almost complete.
The Lusail Stadium will be hosting the opening ceremony and the final of the World Cup. It is under construction as the foundations are being laid.
The Al Bayt Stadium’s exterior has a traditional look of the tents that are used in Qatar’s deserts. It has a capacity of 60,000 people and is the biggest stadium among the 8.
Education City Stadium is in the middle of the major Universities in Qatar. It houses 40,000 people and will host matches up to the quarter-finals stage. The stadium will be reduced in half after hosting the matches. 20,000 seats will be donated to developing countries to aid them in building stadiums.
Al Rayyan Stadium has a capacity of 40,000 and is being built on site of the old Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium. It has a fantastic design and is likely to be jam packed in the World Cup days as it is being built in the 2nd most populous city of Qatar.
Al Thumama Stadium depicts a gahfiya, a cap worn by Arab men. The innovative design has won the Architectural Review Future Projects Award. It also has a capacity of 40,000.
Ras Aboud Stadium is a 40,000-seat stadium which is being built on the shores of the Gulf. The stadium will be dedicated to other sporting and sporting projects after the tournament.
Qatar promises a World Cup which will leave every person around the world in awe. With its state of the art stadiums Qatar will make the 2022 FIFA World Cup a memorable event.
